Martin Van Buren - Our 8th President
Most of us had a small amount of knowledge of our High School's namesake. He was the 8th President of the United States from
1837-1841 and was the first Chief Executive born under the United States flag. Only about 5 feet, 6 inches tall, but trim
and erect, the "Little Magician" dressed fastidiously. His impeccable appearance belied his amiability--and his
humble background. The term "O.K." was popularized because of Van Buren. Van Buren was from Kinderhook, New York,
sometimes referred to as Old Kinderhook in speeches and print. O.K. Clubs soon formed to support Van Buren's campaign. "O.K."
later came to mean all right. Don't you feel proud to be part of this Past President's High School namesake?
